Peter F. Caracappa, Ph.D., CHP of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, spoke at the ANS Connecticut Section Speaker Meeting on November 16th, 2011. His presentation, entitled “Radionuclide Release at Fukushima” is available here.
The March earthquake and ensuing tsunami was a devastating event for Japan in many ways, but it is likely to be most remembered for the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
Dr. Caracappa reviewed the most current knowledge about the events surrounding the accident, with a focus on the impacts of radiation and the radioactive material released to the environment, and the potential dangers to those near and far from the site of the accident.
Dr. Peter F. Caracappa holds a joint appointment as a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering and as the Institute Radiation Safety Officer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a member of the ANS Special Committee on the Fukushima Accident.
