This was another successful meeting featuring a very hot topic for the industry.  At Ted’s request, we made him an ANS Connecticut Section member.  This meeting was a great opportunity for current and past I&C Engineers to get reunite and to catch up.  We had a lot of history in the small crowd of 28 people.

This presentation will provide an overview of hydraulic fracturing, also referred to as “fracking”. An outline of the steps involved in the fracturing process and the types of chemical classes used will be presented. The environmental concerns being raised with regards to groundwater contamination from fracturing operations will be detailed. Several examples of relevant circumstances are provided based on Dr. Saba’s review of information from groundwater contamination claims in Pennsylvania.

About The Speaker:

Dr. Tarek Saba is a senior manager at Exponent’s Environmental Sciences practice.  He provides consulting and expert support to clients in matters involving chemical forensics, geochemistry, and hydrogeology.  Dr. Saba has been involved in matters including natural gas migration; hydraulic fracturing; natural resource damage assessments (NRDA), Superfund (CERCLA) liability,; and remedial cost recovery claims at manufactured gas plants (MGPs).  Dr. Saba earned a Ph.D. from University of Colorado at Boulder, and worked on groundwater remediation technology development for the US EPA before starting his consulting practice.

The Challenges of Cyber Security in Nuclear Energy

Please join us in welcoming Edward (Ted) Quinn, former ANS President, who will speak at the next Connecticut Section Dinner Meeting on the topic of Cyber Security on May 22nd, 2013.  Ted’s talk will address the massive growth in cyber security threats to all sectors of our culture including nuclear, and the progress and lessons learned by both the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the utilities  in working with FERC/NERC in implementing prudent security programs and controls to protect the safety functions of key components and also provide continuity of power.

About the speaker:

Mr. Quinn is a acknowledged authority with over 35 years of utility experience, Past EDWARD L QUINN PHOTO 1212 001 (small)President of the American Nuclear Society (1998-1999), and President of Technology Resources, LLC.  He has managed and performed projects in licensing and compliance, electrical and controls design, and start-up and operation.  He developed Standards for the Instrument Society of America (ISA)  and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and is the author of over 50 papers and presentations on nuclear instrumentation and control subjects.  For over 15 years he has been an instructor at the MIT Summer Reactor Safety Course and is a Board member of the nuclear engineering programs at both Oregon State and The Ohio State University.

He currently provides the licensing support for the eight awarded IOM nuclear projects in China.  In 2009, he was awarded the highest award in IEC, The 1906 Award, for the development of standards, and in 2011, he received The ANS Walter Zinn Award, named for the first President of ANS.
