Fusion: Everything You Wanted to Know (but were afraid to ask!)
An Introduction and Overview of Fusion Energy Research
Featuring: Sam Eddinger
Please join us in welcoming Sam Eddinger who will speak at the next American Nuclear Society Connecticut Section Dinner Meeting on Thursday, February 7th 2013. This talk will present an introduction to the exciting potential of Fusion as an energy source and will discuss the state of research into confinement techniques necessary to make fusion a viable energy source.
Due to the abundance of Hydrogen in our world, fusion energy could provide an endless supply of power. Unfortunately, the two most heavily funded techniques for creating scalable fusion energy; Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and Toroidal Confinement Fusion (TCF) both have significant challenges to becoming a stable energy source from our world. This talk will discuss an overview of what fusion is, how ICF and TCF work, the current challenges to overcome and the future challenges to scaling these technologies. This talk will also provide material about the current methods used to create an ICF Hydrogen capsule, used to create fusion energy.
Sam Eddinger conducted fusion research at General Atomics developing state of the art characterization technologies and techniques for ICF targets. His experience includes collaboration with technical leads from US National Labs and groups from France and Japan.
We will be meeting at the Wood-N-Tap Bar & Grill at 12 Town Line Road, Rocky Hill, CT at 6PM. All of the details are provided this flyer: 20130207 Speaker Meeting Announcement
