Photos and Presentation from the April 9th, 2014 Speaker Event with Michael Quinn

Dr. Michael D. Quinn, of WorkPlace Cornerstone Associates (WCA), presented “Transuranic Uptake at a Commercial Nuclear Power Station” to a group of 24 on April 9th, 2014.  This was a fascinating presentation about a little known significant event at the Bruce Nuclear Power Station in Canada.  Everyone in our industry can and should learn from this event that included many institutionalized errors.  An informative and very helpful Q&A period followed the presentation.  The slides are available below:

WIN and ANS Members at the Burns School

Some ANS Connecticut Section Members volunteered to help out Women in Nuclear complete their final project with the Burn’s School for Latino Studies on Wednesday June 12th.  The 5th grade participants made paper rockets, tin foil boats, and towers out of marshmallows and spaghetti.  Some of the kids might even have learned something along the way!   It was a great day full of fun for everyone as the school year winds down for summer.

Connecticut Section Attends Coloquium on North American Energy Policy

Felix Meissner and Shawn Downey participated in the third Colloquium on North American Energy Policy: Opportunities and Challenges in Nuclear Energy at the Consulate General of Mexico in New York City on April 18, 2013.

This meeting was sponsored by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) of New York in collaboration with the Consulate General of Canada and the Consulate General Mexico.  This colloquium included 35 participants from the US, Canadian, and Mexican governments as well as industry representatives and academia.

A lively discussion was held on how best to promote and support the adoption of commercial nuclear electricity production throughout North America.  Nuclear power is of significant interest to the AJC Energy Committee as it is seen as critical to regional energy independence and security.

Granby Memorial High School Job Shadow Day

On February 5th, 2013, Westinghouse hosted a “Job Shadow Day” for 12 students from the Granby Memorial High School interested in engineering careers.  ANS Connecticut Section Officers Elizabeth Sundstrom, Felix Meissner, and Shawn Downey participated along with engineers from the Westinghouse Addison Road facility in Windsor, Connecticut.

The students were given a tour of the manufacturing floor and shown first hand how PWR fuel assemblies are made.  We later broke into small groups and tried our best to answer all the questions put to us.  Discussions included practical college and career advice as well as what engineers actually do all day.  It seems that we all had a few war stories to share.

Everyone who participated gave positive feedback and we hope to make this an annual event.
