DEBRIS EFFECTS IN LONG-TERM POST-LOCA PWR COOLING

ABSTRACT

Long term cooling of the reactor core by recirculation of water from the sump of a PWR following a LOCA differs from short-term cooling by ECCS that the NRC has regulated under 10 CFR 50.46 for decades.   The numerous constituents of debris, mostly created by the jet from the LOCA, complicate prediction and verification of the performance of strainers that are intended to protect the pumps and particularly the core.   This gave rise to the NRC’s generic safety issue GSI-191 that is still incompletely resolved after 17 years and has led to major changes in many nuclear plants as well as a succession of tests that have sometimes yielded surprises.   The history of this issue and of the pertinent technical phenomena will be reviewed.

About The Speaker:

Graham Wallis is the emeritus Sherman Fairchild Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth, where he has been a faculty member since 1962.   He has worked in the area of multiphase flows for over 50 years.   His book “One-Dimensional Two-Phase Flow” was published in 1969.   From 1988 to 2007 he was a member of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards, being its Chairman in the years 2005 and 2006.  He continues to consult for that committee.
